Monogram

By Nicholas Tan Hao Lun

Hmm.. in this final assignment for 2 dimensional design, we were given the opportunity to create our own monogram. Well, for those who doesn't know what a monogram is, its a is a motif made by overlapping or combining two or more letters or other graphemes to form one symbol. After creating my own monogram, here comes the challenging part.

We were told to transfer it onto 5 different objects through DIY method.

The pictures above were the examples of me creating different types of monogram while im in the process of deciding which one should i choose to be as my monogram.

After doing 5 pages of monogram exploration, i've finally made up my mind and later decided on picking a simple monogram to be transfered on to my 5 objects. The reason of my decision is because i want everyone, other than me to be able to read or even recognised my monogram as i find that its meaningless if i am the only one who is able to/understand my own monogram. Then, i started working on the development of them,( how can i improve them) by testing them out on a few A3 size papers to ensure that i get the effects that i wanted during the transfer.

As for the 5 objects, you guys must be thinking what did i chose right?
Let me tell you about it right now.For the 5 objects, my concept is that its something related to me since i'm young. For example, i chose bottle as one of them. Not because of the object though, more like how did i get the bottle. It was given by one of my teachers when i was still studying KUMON and therefore after doing this program for nearly 10 years,i think that it plays a role about me.

As for the method of transfer,i used spray paint as i think that it would look nice on it,and it did.

Hmmm.... like i said previously, the objects i chose were based on the things that are related to me since young and this was one of it.I transfered the monogram through cutting them out.You will be able to see it clearly in the picture where its located at the bottom right.

By the way, have you guys heard of Jenga? For the 3rd object, i believe everyone knows why i picked this. Jenga, a wood stacking game, clearly its every 90s kid childhood unlike kids nowadays..where technologies does the works. As for the transferring method, i applied woodcut. Looks nice right.

My perfume was also used as one of them. HAH
